MHC Workshops

JANUARY 2021 – PRESENT

Our MHC Workshops are co-developed with, by, and for Latinx residents of manufactured housing communities (MHCs) in Boulder County, Colorado, along with locally and nationally recognized guest speakers and teachers. The purpose of the workshops is to share skills, resources, knowledge, and access to a wide variety of sustainability, arts, healing, and other topics and opportunities not otherwise readily available in Colorado in Spanish. Most workshops are in a Do-It-Yourself format, often with free supplies provided for the first 15–30 people registered, funding permitting.

Our MHC Workshops were originally inspired by an EAC initiated collaboration in 2013/14 with Boulder Ridge Mobile Home Community in Lafayette, Colorado called ECO: Exploring Culture and Opportunities. ECO offered a series of 11 workshops for kids and adults bringing together natural history, energy and water conservation, and the arts funded by Toyota TogetherGreen through the National Audubon Society. The workshops were co-developed by Stacy Lambright, Shades of Green; Steve Jones, Boulder County Audubon Teen Naturalists; Jolt, Guerilla Gardens; Cheryl Diaz, Boulder Ridge; and Marda Kirn, EcoArts Connections; along with additional collaborators. Activities were attended by Latinx youth and adults from Boulder Ridge and surrounding manufactured housing and low-income communities and resulted in a 99% self-reported behavior change in energy and water conservation among attendees. For more information see Youth & Families: Boulder Ridge ECO – Exploring Culture and Opportunities (link available soon).

Building on ECO, in 2020/21, EAC was contracted by the City of Boulder “to put equity and inclusion at the center of its Climate Mobilization Action Plan.” In order to develop the most helpful recommendations for the City of Boulder, we again worked with Stacy Lambright, Shades of Green but also with City of Boulder’s Housing Organizer, Luz Galicia; San Lazaro MHC and EAC then program assistant Ariana Garcia; and 26 Latinx youth and adult MHC resident consultants from seven MHCs in Boulder and Lafayette. Additional collaborators included Boulder County. EnergySmart, and Xcel Energy. A final report is available in English and Spanish. A final report is available in English and Spanish. In 2022, we are strengthening the relationship between the Sí Se Puede team with community leaders from Boulder Meadows, Orchard Grove, Ponderosa, and Vista Village MHCs guided by Luz Galicia and the Mamás Leóna’s Group with community leaders from San Lazaro MHC guided by Susana Rodriguez. Together, along with community collaborators, we are planning to co-develop a series of activities with, by, and for MHC communities, led by scientists, sustainablists, artists, and healers, among others.
